Tiree is well known as a mecca for serious wavesailing; what is less well known is that it has arguably the best beginners' conditions in Scotland with a very helpful teaching set up at Wild Diamond Windsurfing: Willy Angus MacLean 07712 159 205. Conditions for intermediates are brilliant with flat water blasting on the shallow loch or Gott Bay.

There is a very pretty nine hole golf course with epic seascapes in all directions to distract you from the misery of your latest slice.

Has become very popular in the last few years; wingers often outnumbering kitesurfers and windsurfers.
Plenty of old school ways to keep fit but if you want organised help check out:
Sea kayaking - if you're already keen you'll have your own. Sit on kayaks available for rent from Blackhouse Watersports, Wild Diamond, and Suds Surf school.
Sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding: bring your own boat or charm someone who has a boat. Boat trips with Skipinnish.
Socialising: an extended party atmosphere develops from the moment you arrive at the ferry terminal; frequent ceilidhs during the summer.
Music - quite apart from the famous Tiree Music Festival there seems to be an endless production line of quality ceilidh bands produced by the local school.
Alternatively, enjoy the peace and quiet of the island.
Bird and animal watching; many seals, basking sharks, otters and occasionally whales - killer whales and minke.)
Visiting local artists' galleries.
Eating: fabulous local meat (lamb and beef) and fresh seafood: crab, lobster, fish. Restaurants: Ceabhar, Scarinish Hotel and Tiree Lodge Hotel. Cafes - several available (see www.isleoftiree.com) and Sunday afternoons at Hynish Centre.
Walking: no Munros but great walks along the coast: beaches and dramatic headlands, including some big cliffs. Big, dramatic skies often most spectacular when the weather is mixed.
